What is Reflexology?
 

We know from ancient texts, drawings and artefacts, that many cultures across the world as far back as the Egyptians saw working on the feet as a way to activate the healing powers of the body.  Many of the techniques used then have been developed into the therapy we now know as Reflexology.

 

The main link between old and new is the long established principle that there are energy zones that run through the body.  William Fitzgerald, a Dr pratising in the early 20th century, developed the modern zone theory of the human body.  He postulated that parts of the body corresponded to other parts of the body. By way of a dramatic experiment, he showed he could stick a pin into a volunteer’s face without causing pain if he applied pressure to the point in the person’s hand which corresponded to that area first.In the 1930, a pioneering physiotherapist named Eunice Ingham (who later earned the moniker The Mother of Reflexology) used these theories with her patients.  She found that the zones were best accessed through the feet due to the high number of nerve endings and created the foot map, with its specific reflex points, that many Reflexologists still use today.

 

Reflexologists specify that there are 10 zones running from head to toe, 5 on each side of the body, ending in each foot and running down the arms into the tips of the fingers.    We work on the principle that stimulating these zones (by applying pressure with fingers and thumbs to the reflexes within them) can affect the entire zone and can revitalise and balance the organs and glands within it. Reflexology is hugely beneficial for both young and old.  There are no age limits.  It has a unique ability to calm the body allowing you to deal more effectively with stress and discomfort.  You may find Reflexology helps you to feel less pain, feel less anxious, sleep better, have more energy and a greater sense of wellbeing.
